  Can someone help on this? Looking at the demo site pages https://demo.govintra.net/about/ and the child page https://demo.govintra.net/about/who-we-are/ I can’t see how the excerpt used in the parent page link is created.
  
  I don’t see any excerpt box on the template Page with Left Nav, so how can different text be on the excerpt than on the page.
  
  What is it I’m missing?

  You need the Page Excerpt plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/page-excerpt/
  
  Once installed, pull down ‘Screen options’ in the editing screen to check the excerpt is visible.
