  Just in case anyone else was wondering this is how we overcome the issue. We Used the cloud attendance system WhosOff coupled with the The Event Calendar plugin with iCal importer. Staff then use links from the intranet or smartphones to request time off and the ical is imported in to WordPress every 30 minutes to give an overview of the WhosOff data.
